The most complex question in the world is not “What is the meaning of life?” or “What was first, the chicken or the egg?” No, not at all.
The most complex question ever is: How are you?
Whenever someone asks me that, I freeze. Because it’s too complex. I feel like asking back: What do you mean? How am I: physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually.. Where shall I start? It’s too complex.
However, the only language in which I find it super easy to answer this question is German!
Because in Germany, when you meet up with someone, they will often ask you: Naaa?
Which can literally mean:
- How’s your health?
- How’s your cat?
- How many times have you crossed the street on a red light this week, be honest!
- Did you pay all your insurances? Aaallll of them?
- Do you still fix your emotional eating with one Eisbein per day?
So all these questions and many more can be summarized in German in just one sound: Naaa!
This is what I call German efficiency!
And for me it’s a relief. Because I can finally answer this question without hesitation.
I will say: Na, na, na, na, naaa, na, na, na! Na, na, na, naaa, naaa, naaa, naaaaaaa.
